How to Clean an Area Rug

Area rugs bring warmth and character to our living spaces, but over time, even with regular vacuuming, dust and dirt can settle deep into the fibers. If you’ve noticed a lack of freshness or a dingy appearance, it’s a clear sign that your rug is due for a deep cleaning. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of giving your rug a professional-level clean to restore its vibrancy and maintain its beauty.

Assessing the Need

To determine if your rug requires deep cleaning, perform a simple test. Lift a corner of your rug and drop it. If a cloud of dust emerges, or if your rug emits an unpleasant odor, it’s a clear indication that it’s time for a thorough cleaning. Additionally, rough and matted areas, as well as uneven coloration, are telltale signs that your rug needs attention.

Getting Started

Before diving into the cleaning process, gather the necessary supplies: a trusty vacuum cleaner, a rug beater or broom, stain remover, rug shampoo, a 5-gallon bucket, a garden hose with a spray nozzle, a tarp larger than your rug, a squeegee, and ideally, a box fan. Choosing a sunny day for cleaning will aid in the drying phase.

Removing Dirt & Dust

Begin by emptying and cleaning the filter in your vacuum to ensure maximum dirt removal – flip the rug over and vacuum the underside as well.. Next, take your rug outside and place it on sawhorses, a sturdy outdoor table, or chairs. Utilize a rug beater or broom to dislodge deep-seated dirt from the fibers. Don’t forget to clean the rug pad as well. If you have allergies, wear a dust mask for protection.

Washing & Rinsing

Refer to the instructions on your rug cleaner to determine whether it should be used directly or needs to be diluted. Lay down the tarp on a flat surface – one that is slightly inclined to prevent dirty water pooling would be perfect. Test a small corner of the rug to check for any adverse reactions to your cleaning solution. You can do this by rubbing the spot with a white towel to see whether the dye gets absorbed into the towel. Allow the area to dry, then check to see that it hasn’t faded or bled. If you find that the dye is migrating, then you may need to have the rug dry cleaned. Once approved, apply the solution to small sections of the rug, scrubbing and rinsing until the entire rug is clean.

Starting at one end, use the hose and nozzle to begin rinsing the entire rug. Move across the rug until the water runs clear, repeating if necessary. Push the squeegee in a parallel pattern following the grain of the rug fibers. Repeat to remove as much water as possible.

Drying

To ensure thorough drying, it’s essential to allow airflow on both sides of the rug. Elevate the rug by placing it over sawhorses or sturdy chairs, rotating it periodically. Use a box fan to expedite the drying process. It’s crucial that the rug is completely dry before placing it back on the floor. Finally, vacuum or use a brush to restore the rug’s fibers to their original position.

With proper care and maintenance, your area rug can retain its beauty and longevity. Regular vacuuming is a great start, but periodic deep cleaning is vital to remove embedded dirt and revitalize the rug’s appearance.
